J. Barry Mittan was a Florida State University alumnus and lifelong photographer. Born in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania into a military family, Mittan spend his childhood moving around the world with a brother and two sisters. The family eventually settled in Orlando, Florida and Mittan began attending FSU in 1967. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1971 bu continued at the university to receive his masters in Urban and Regional Planning in 1976. Throughout his near decade at FSU, Mittan pursued his passion of photography, working for the yearbook, Florida Flambeau, and numerous other student organizations. He attended all sporting events as a sports photographer and became the unofficial photographer of the Flying High Circus as well as a performing member. After retiring from his 30 year long career at the Department of Health, Mittan turned his love of photography into a second career as a photojournalist for international figure skating.
